When Edward/Mary and family moved to Askham/Lowther, William did not travel with them, initially working as an indoor farm servant at Caber, Staffield, Cumberland.

He moved to Lowther sometime before 1881 and met and married Kate Chapelhow, daughter of Richard Chapelhow, landlord of the Lowther Castle Inn, Hackthorpe. Kate and William were married on 8/12/1888 at Thrimby. William and Kate had nine children, Richard Charlton b1889, Fred b1890, Mary b1893, Thomas William Charlton b1895, Beatrice b1900, Anthony b1904, Margaret b1908 and Albert b1909.

William died on 10/08/1936 at 9 Lowther Village and is interred in Lowther churchyard.
