Edward Charlton married Mary Beckton on 17/10/1863 in Croglin, Cumberland. On 27/12/1863, son Thomas was born. Four further children were born and baptised in Croglin, John 02/06/1865, William 09/05/1866, Margaret 20/03/1869 and finally Edward 02/04/1871. Unfortunately, son John died and was interred at Croglin on 05/06/1865.

The 1871 census shows Edward, Mary and family resident at "The Robin Hood" where Edward is classed as a Publican/Farmer of 135 acres. By 1881 there were no Charlton's left in Croglin. The photograph below was taken approximately in 1872, showing  all of Edward Snr's female relatives in Croglin ,and their children, along with Edwards brother John's family. John Charlton had married Ann Dures in Croglin.

From left to right, standing is Margaret Jane Charlton, seated (wearing the bonnet) is Mary Charlton (nee Hetherington). Next to her is Edward's wife Mary (nee Beckton) , seated next to her is John's wife Ann (nee Dures). The tree girls in dark clothing are John & Ann's daughters Frances, Elizabeth and Mary. The remaining children are Edward & Mary's. Seated holding his hat is William. On her mother Mary's knee is Margaret. On Ann Dures' knee is Edward and in front of her is Thomas. Sometime between 1871 and 1874 they uprooted and moved to Askham and then Lowther where they produced a further five children, Mary Ann b1874, Elizabeth b1875, Jane b1878, Anthony b1880 and Louisa b1882.
